When run, this Quicken 4 Updater will look at your existing copy of Quicken 4 for the Macintosh (Release 2, 3, or 4) and update it to Quicken 4 Release 6. Release 6 includes fixes to a few specific, customer-reported problems and improves application compatibility on certain platforms. It contains no new features or feature enhancements. You may not notice a difference between your earlier release of Quicken 4 and Quicken 4 Release 6.
This file contains instructions and information that you may find helpful in updating to Quicken 4 Release 6.
1. To determine the release number of your copy of Quicken 4, go to the Apple menu and select "About Quicken…".
2. A window will come up showing the names of those who contributed to the development of Quicken 4 for Macintosh.
3. Type the letter "R".
4. The release number of your copy of Quicken 4 will appear to the right of the words "Version 4".
5. Click anywhere on the credits window to make the window go away.
6. If your release is R2, R3, or R4, you may wish to use this Updater to update your copy of Quicken to Release 6. If your release number is R6 (or later), you do not need this Updater.
B. Before updating
-----------------
Make sure that you have your original Quicken 4 program disk stored safely.
Make sure that you have at least 2 MB available on your hard drive.
Turn off any virus checking software.
If you are currently running Quicken 4, quit the application.
C. Using the Updater
-------------------
1. Double click on the Updater.
2. A screen will come up indicating that the Updater will update your copy of Quicken 4 to Quicken 4 Release 6. It will attempt to locate Quicken 4 on your hard drive and highlight it as the application to be updated.
3. Confirm that this is the application you want to update and click on Update.
4. You will then see an "Updating Quicken 4..." status bar. It should take between 2 and 5 minutes to complete the update.
5. When the update is successful you will see a dialog box indicating "The update of Quicken 4 was successful."
6. Once the update is complete, you will only have Release 6 of Quicken 4 on your drive. You will no longer have a copy of your old release.
D. Additional improved files
--------------------------
The Updater comes with two additional files that have been improved in Quicken 4 Release 6.
Drag the new BillMinder file into your System Folder. In System 7, it needs to be placed in the Extensions folder inside the System Folder. Click on the OK button when you are asked if you want to replace the older version.
Drag the TAX.SCD file into your Quicken 4 Folder. Click on the OK button when you are asked if you want to replace the older version.
E. Troubleshooting
-----------------
If you get the message "Could not update this copy of Quicken 4 because this updater will only update releases R2, R3, and R4," then the Updater is not recognizing your selected application as a valid candidate for updating. Make sure that the application is not Quicken 3 or a release of Quicken 4 that is later than R4. If it is an updatable release of Quicken 4, then reinstall the application from your original program disk, and start the update process again.
F. Tips about the updated release
------------------------------
The last modified date for the updated release will be in November.
The size of the updated release will be a few kilobytes smaller than the original application.
Drag a copy of the Quicken 4 Updater to a floppy disk, label it, and store it with your original Quicken 4 program disk.
